How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

oil change

Imagine running a race in Indianapolis in July without drinking enough water. You wouldn’t run very well and you might do serious damage to your body. That’s what happens when you drive with dirty or inadequate motor oil. Motor oil is what keeps your car running on the roads in Indianapolis. Read on to find out how often you should change your oil.

Oil Change Frequency Guidelines

Check your car’s owner manual to find out how often your specific make and model should get an oil change. Most manufacturers recommend an oil change every 7,000-10,000 miles, depending on how you drive in Carmel. If you do any of these activities, you’ll need more frequent oil changes:

  • Off-roading
  • Commercial driving
  • Racing
  • Heavy towing

Oil Change Tips

Here are a few other things to keep in mind in deciding when to schedule an oil change:

  • Even cars that are infrequently driven need their oil changed twice a year.
  • Always replace the oil filter when you get an oil change. Oil filters can be purchased through our parts department.
  • Make sure you know whether your car requires synthetic or conventional oil. Using the wrong kind for your car can cause permanent damage.
  • Regular oil changes will save you money in the long run. You can save money now with our service specials.

How to Check Your Oil

  • Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground and that the engine is turned off and cold.
  • Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick. If needed, refer to your owner’s manual.
  • Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  • Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

If the top of your oil streak is between two marks or within a cross-hatched area, the oil level is good. If it isn’t, you’ll need to add more oil.
